Absolutely cracking tale Andrew - off the scale of crazy and what a movie it would make if anyone outside of the Thaiosphere cared about it.

Another small point in relation to Prem I'll never forget the vindictive significance of after he died Sia-O demolishing totally his residence in an act as vengeful spite for his opposition to him during his life. That and when he fled with his entourage to the UK seemingly worrying as to what would become of him. Can't remember if that was before of after Rama 9 died.

I find it amazing how this guy makes a life full of orgies with a harem and feasts with a close entourage sound so thoroughly miserable. Gotta be pretty pathetic to make being a king sound awful.

It’s good to have you back. I’ve been wondering what Vaj has been up to lately. The information about the recent airlift was a bit disconcerting, and was news to me. Is this widely known in Thailand?

Just a very minor point, Cambodia's monarchy was not deposed by Communists in the 1970s; the 1970 coup by Lon Nol and Sirik Matak created the Khmer Republic and the Khmer Rouge created Democratic Kampuchea in 1975. Head of State even if ceremonial? Norodom Sihanouk.

And, I should add, once again, amazing long-form, superbly documented reportage, Andrew. The attention to detail is just incredible. What you describe is truly mind-boggling.

Fascinating. This is almost book-length. I feel like I'm reading that long awaited book or that there is no longer a need for a book as you are continually doing such in-depth, up-to-the minute reporting. There is no way to fit all this material into one book.
