I don't know the answer (hopefully I eventually will) but I doubt the release of the activists was connected. I assume the authorities just didn't want them to die from hunger strikes or covid which would have caused huge anger and reenergised the protest movement

Andrew, when you wrote the book "A Kingdom in Crisis", the consensus in Thailand was, that Vijara... will never be king. This was supported by many royalists and influential business people. In spite of this he still became king. What is your opinion about this? How did it happen?
